Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?

Isaiah 41:9

I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest CORNERS I called you. I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.

Isaiah 11:12

And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS of the earth.

Revelation 7:1

After this I saw four angels standing at the FOUR CORNERS of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.

Revelation 20:8

And will go out to deceive the nations in the FOUR CORNERS of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore.

1 Samuel 2:8

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the PILLARS OF THE EARTH are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?
They don't understand the difference between a circle and a sphere.
Too much Scripture!!!11Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?
Beats me.

It's just theory, not a fact.

There is obviously no evidence to support the theory that the earth is round.
hmm dont know ill ask satan next timeCreationists, why do you believe the earth is round?
I don't need to "believe" it's round - I've seen a photograph.

I KNOW it's round.

(You've got a problem. Perhaps you should see a counselor)
he Bible indicates that the earth is round. Consider Isaiah 40:22 which mentions the “circle of the earth.” This description is certainly fitting—particularly when the earth is viewed from space; the earth always appears as a circle since it is round.

Another verse that indicates the spherical nature of our planet is Job 26:10. This verse teaches that God has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters at the boundary of light and darkness. This boundary between light and darkness (day and night) is called the “terminator” since the light stops or “terminates” there. Someone standing on the terminator would be experiencing either a sunrise or a sunset; they are going from day to night or from night to day. The terminator is always a circle, because the earth is round.

One of the great delights of observing the moon through a small telescope is to look at its terminator, especially during the first or third quarter phases when the terminator is directly down the middle of the moon. The craters are most easily seen at this boundary since the sun is at a low angle and casts very long shadows there. The moon looks particularly three-dimensional when viewed through a telescope during these phases; it is clear that the moon is a sphere—not a flat disk (see photo below).

The moon

For the earth, the terminator occurs not on a cratered rocky surface, but primarily on water (since the earth’s surface is 70 percent water). Job 26:10 suggests a “God’s eye” view of the earth. This biblical passage would be nonsense if the earth were flat, since there would be no true terminator; there is no line to “step over” that separates the day from night on a flat surface. Either it is day everywhere or night everywhere on a hypothetical “flat earth.” However, the earth does indeed have a boundary between light and darkness which is always a circle since the earth is round.

Curiously, many astronomy textbooks credit Pythagoras (c. 570–500 B.C.) with being the first person to assert that the earth is round.1 However, the biblical passages are older than this. Isaiah is generally acknowledged to have been written in the 700s B.C. and Job is thought to have been written around 2000 B.C. The secular astronomers before the time of Pythagoras must have thought the Bible was wrong about its teaching of a round earth, yet the Bible was exactly right. It was the secular science of the day that needed to be corrected.

Thats too much info to read...but what little I figure you are trying to say is...the four corners of the earth in my opinion is that this is in reference to the north, south, east and west. Now you ask why I believe the earth is round? Easy, when I see the pictures that are sent from space and it shows the round earth....thats proof enough for me
No time to read your lengthy question and scriptures.
Did anyone really read all of that?
mike and pauly, a circle is not a sphere.... think pizza.

gregory: that verse describes a flat earth

"from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;"

think: a table.
your argument is flawed

four corners means north, south, east, and west.

Shows the earth is round.

Deu 13:7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
The flat earth myth was a story written by Washington Irving. What I do find funny is how some people love to criticize some Christians for literal interpretations but then they turn around and try and use that same ploy. Obviously this poor asker is unaware of expression. Does he phone the news and correct them in the morning when they say the su will rise at 5:45 a.m. (The sun does no rise) This is an example of how we use expressions today. Perhaps it never occurred to him that others than himself may also use expressions. Hint #1 If you approach reading the bible trying to find fault you are going to find some. But if you try and approach it being fair minded you may save yourself some embarassment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_…
So then what your saying is there is no such thing as North, South, East, and West. Right?
I think you are pretty sharp and courageous to point out this often miss understood passages in the bible. I do appreciate your righteous heart trying to correct any wrong or misguided beliefs for the sake of many.

For centuries churches misinterpreted these and even excommunicated scientists who try to reveal the scientific facts regarding earth and where the center of universe is, and etc.

Here are some scriptures you might like to consider.

KJV Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the CIRCLE of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.

Douay-Rheims Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the GLOBE of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.

KJV Job26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the EMPTY PLACE, and HANGETH the earth upon NOTHING.

New American Standard Bible Job26:7 "He stretches out the north over EMPTY SPACE

And HANGS the earth on NOTHING."

We use the same expression when we talk about the location on the earth: north, south east, west and so on even though there is no direction in space we need to use these terms to describe the relative locations.

Bible is not a science book but any scientific expression in the bible is accurate and you might want to look into that...Thanks.
Does the earth end at the sea? If you can't walk underwater , it does. The four corners of the earth refers to the cardinal compass points or quandrants/sections of the earth.....is there really a west if you go far enough easterly? Pillars of the earth refer to subteranean structures that supported the earth's crust which at one point during and after creation before the flood had many caverns of underground water reservoirs....rather than the oceans we see today which were not as deep or covered as much land before the flood of Noah....what has that got to do with the earth being round or not? See Dr Walt Brown's Hydroplate Theory for a fuller explanation of those "pillars".

The Bible has other passages that refer to the earth being a circular object...just as looking at the moon or sun, from an observational viewpoint, one would say it's round.

“It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22).

Perhaps no phrase in Scripture has been so controversial as the phrase, "the four corners of the earth." The word translated "corners," as in the phrase above, is the Hebrew word, KANAPH. Kanaph is translated in a variety of ways. However, it generally means extremity.

It is translated "borders" in Numbers 15:38. In Ezekiel 7:2 it is translated "four corners" and again in Isaiah 11:12 "four corners." Job 37:3 and 38:13 as "ends."

The Greek equivalent in Revelation 7:1 is gonia. The Greek meaning is perhaps more closely related to our modern divisions known as quadrants. Gonia literally means angles, or divisions. It is customary to divide a map into quadrants as shown by the four directions.

Some have tried to ridicule the Bible to say that it teaches that the earth is square. The Scripture makes it quite clear that the earth is a sphere (Isaiah 40:22).

Some have tried to say there are four knobs, or peaks on a round earth. Regardless of the various ways kanaph is translated, it makes reference to EXTREMITIES.

There are many ways in which God the Holy Spirit could have said corner. Any of the following Hebrew words could have been used:

Pinoh is used in reference to the cornerstone.

Paioh means "a geometric corner"

Ziovyoh means "right angle" or "corner"

Krnouth refers to a projecting corner.

Paamouth - If the Lord wanted to convey the idea of a square, four-cornered earth, the Hebrew word paamouth could have been used. Paamouth means square.

Instead, the Holy Spirit selected the word kanaph, conveying the idea of extremity.

It is doubtful that any religious Jew would ever misunderstand the true meaning of kanaph. For nearly 2,000 years, religious Jews have faced the city of Jerusalem three times daily and chanted the following prayer:

Sound the great trumpet for our freedom,

Raise the banner for gathering our exiles,

And gather us together from THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH

into our own land.

The Book of Isaiah describes how the Messiah, the Root of Jesse, shall regather his people from the four corners of the earth. They shall come from every extremity to be gathered into Israel.

"And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,

Who shall stand as a banner to the people;

For the Gentiles shall seek Him,

And His resting place shall be glorious."

It shall come to pass in that day

That the LORD shall set His hand again the second time

To recover the remnant of His people who are left,

From Assyria and Egypt,

From Pathros and Cush,

From Elam and Shinar,

From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

He will set up a banner for the nations,

And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,

And gather together the dispersed of Judah

From THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH.

(Isaiah 11:10-12, New King James Version)

Some Bible critics have claimed that Revelation 7:1 assumes a flat earth since the verse refers to angels standing at the “four corners” of the earth. Actually, the reference is to the cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Similar terminology is often used today when we speak of the sun's rising and setting, even though the earth, not the sun, is doing the moving. Bible writers used the “language of appearance,” just as people always have. Without it, the intended message would be awkward at best and probably not understood clearly. [DD]

In the Old Testament, Job 26:7 explains that the earth is suspended in space, the obvious comparison being with the spherical sun and moon. [DD]

A literal translation of Job 26:10 is "He described a circle upon the face of the waters, until the day and night come to an end." A spherical earth is also described in Isaiah 40:21-22 - "the circle of the earth."

Proverbs 8:27 also suggests a round earth by use of the word circle (e.g., New King James Bible and New American Standard Bible). If you are overlooking the ocean, the horizon appears as a circle. This circle on the horizon is described in Job 26:10. The circle on the face of the waters is one of the proofs that the Greeks used for a spherical earth. Yet here it is recorded in Job, ages before the Greeks discovered it. Job 26:10 indicates that where light terminates, darkness begins. This suggests day and night on a spherical globe. [JSM]

The Hebrew record is the oldest, because Job is one of the oldest books in the Bible. Historians generally [wrongly] credit the Greeks with being the first to suggest a spherical earth. In the sixth century B.C., Pythagoras suggested a spherical earth. [JSM]

Eratosthenes of Alexandria (circa 276 to 194 or 192 B.C.) calcuated the circumference of the earth "within 50 miles of the present estimate." [Encyclopedia Brittanica]

The Greeks also drew meridians and parallels. They identified such areas as the poles, equator, and tropics. This spherical earth concept did not prevail; the Romans drew the earth as a flat disk with oceans around it. [JSM]

The round shape of our planet was a conclusion easily drawn by watching ships disappear over the horizon and also by observing eclipse shadows, and we can assume that such information was well known to New Testament writers. Earth's spherical shape was, of course, also understood by Christopher Columbus. [DD]

The implication of a round earth is seen in the book of Luke, where Jesus described his return, Luke 17:31. Jesus said, "In that day," then in verse 34, "In that night." This is an allusion to light on one side of the globe and darkness on the other simultaneously. [JSM]

"When the Bible touches on scientific subjects, it is entirely accurate." [DD]

I think the terms "corners" and "ends of the earth" are not in relation to the shape of the planet itself but perhaps to the dimensions of heaven and hell
those words were just used to describe the whole earth..God's power is revealed more by the choice of words. It really doesn't matter because God knows the earth si round, of course, He created it.
in job it talks about "the circle of the earth genius" the first book in THE WORLD TO DO SAY SO!!!!!!!! I fyou need the scripture write to me, your writings are vague and you do not know what your talking about but twisting facts to your pleasure, typical ignorant heathen. The words are plural and allegorical and and references to the knowledge of the people of that day. Ohhh I`m sorry you don`t understand how jewish writings translate let alone to english nor greek.
