I'm looking for some great books to read?

What are your favorite books? Also, please add a little explanation about the book. I'm an avid reader and i usually read the new releases and the library or gravitate towards personal stories written during wars or major disasters.. but, really I'm up for anything. I just finished Pillars of the Earth and Lace Reader.. I've also recently gone through a Nelson Demile stage and read way too many of his books. I tend to dislike anything that I can get through in a day, or anything too scary, or that spends too much time on a pointless topic such as idolizing drug use.

Thank you :)

Feel free to expand my mind, I'll look into any books that you post hereI'm looking for some great books to read?
Here are five rather random books in no particular order:

1) Snow Falling on Cedars--on a small island off the coast of Washington state, a Japanese American is indicted for murdering his neighbor. Meanwhile, the town reporter, who has been emotionally and physically wounded in WWII, gradually pieces together the truth. It's a beautifully written book, and it's interesting to learn about our discrimination against the Japanese during and after WWII.

2) Saving Fish from Drowning--an elderly Chinese woman has planned a journey to Burma for 10 of her friends. However, before she can make the trip, she dies unexpectedly. Now a ghost, she watches her friends' disastrous journey from an almost-omniscient vantage point. This book is strikingly imaginative and original. More than fifteen distinct characters are developed in the course of the novel, and the setting is beautifully and thoroughly described. It's a bit slow in the beginning, but as you read, you get the hang of the narration and begin very quickly to connect with the characters. This is honestly one of my three favorite books.

3) Slaughterhouse-Five: perhaps you've read this one already, because in its own very peculiar way, it's a personal story written in the wake of war (WWII to be exact). But in case you missed it, here's the essential plot: Billy Pilgrim--survivor of the fire bombing of Dresden, optometrist, husband, and father--comes unstuck in time, meaning he can travel between the many experiences of his own life (which include, among other things, being abducted by aliens and pushed into a pool at the age of three). It's truly a bizarre book, but Vonnegut somehow pulls it off. We're given a glimpse into how strange the world must have felt after a meaningless catastrophe like the firebombing of Dresden. I've read this book three times, and it is one of my absolute favorite books.

4) And She Was---I stumbled on this book on the clearance shelf at Borders and bought it for around $4. After I read it, I felt guilty; the book was so good, I wished I could have given the author a great deal of money for it. And She Was is the story of a trashy but intelligent cocktail waitress called Brandy who, stumbling through her life aimlessly, follows a boy she doesn't really love to what is essentially the ends of the earth: Unalaska. Two hundred years earlier, three Aleutian women break a taboo which will follow their descendants forever. The story is about self-discovery and ultimately poses an interesting question: to what extent does does an individual choose to be a victim?

5) Motherless Brooklyn---A man with Tourette's syndrome tries to solve the murder of his boss. This is a very dark book, but it's deeply fascinating. For me, the fascination was stemmed much less from the mystery itself than from the character with Tourette's syndrome. Before reading the book, I had only a vague notion of what Tourette's was. But reading about this fictional individual's journey was pretty riveting.I'm looking for some great books to read?
right with you there ;) I usually read bits of several books a day

I'm into historical fiction, so i'd recommend to you Conn Iggulden's four novels about Julius Caesar. I found them very interesting, and not dull at all. somehow Conn was able to describe his life without getting stuck on all the wars, and was able to add history, imagination, personal bits. very good read ;)

on ebay, there's all four of them for sale, and you can read the description of what their about: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40%26amp;_trksid=m570.l2736%26amp;_nkw=emperor%3A+Gates+of+Rome+all+fourI'm looking for some great books to read?
The Angel Experiment. In this book the characters are stellar; From Max to Angel, these Teenagers, tweenagers, and kids are excellent reflections of their real life counterparts to a T. And the villains, while they make you hate them, are well written. They're never so predictable, or straightforward with their plans it makes you roll your eyes. And, yes, while this book leaves some things unexplained and the story does end quite abruptly, Max convincingly shushes that with a convincing teenage comment. Highly recommended reading.
Eragon- Great book series really long that will last you a while, really can't explain it.

The Ranger's Apprentice- This series was so good I'm not even kidding, read it!

The Last Apprentice- Really good
