LOVE "To Kill a Mockingbird"; it's many-layered and, if you will need to write a reaction paper or something on it, gives you a wealth of interesting options to discuss. Timeless topics. Many things have not changed, but Obama's election will add some poignancy to the central conflict.
I've heard The Pillars of the Earth is really good.
I had no interest in reading The Road when I looked it up.
Jane Eyre and P%26amp;P are both period pieces and if you are ok with 'old English' they are great.
