What is the difference between the earth and the world by these verses ?

1 Samuel 2:8

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

Psalm 9:8

And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

Psalm 33:8

Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

Psalm 73:12

Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

Psalm 96:13

Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Psalm 97:4

His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

Isaiah 18:3

All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye.

Isaiah 26:9

With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

Isaiah 34:1

Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.

Jeremiah 10:12

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Matthew 4:8

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them Matthew 12:32

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Luke 1:70

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world beganWhat is the difference between the earth and the world by these verses ?
In most of the cases the words "earth" and "world" are used interchangeably to express the same concept in poetic terms.

For instance: "Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him."

The two same physical locations are in mind here but the emphasis is on the people. So when it says "Let all the "earth" fear, it means the "the inhabitants of the world".

That's a part of Hebrew poetry. Instead of rhyming syllables they rhyme ideas or concepts expressed in different ways in order to give added emphasis.

In the New Testament there are uses of the word translated into English as "world" that refer to the "world system" that denies God. But in the verses you posted the "earth" or the "world" refer to a location or the people in that location. What is the difference between the earth and the world by these verses ?
To find out what "world " or "earth" means in a scripture you could read the context ( the scripture before and after) - or consider the whole scripture . You will find out this way if it refers to human kind or the "globe"

Another way of finding out is more complicated , is to find the original "Greek" or "hebrew" word

The Hebrew ’e′rets and the Greek ge (from which come the English words “geography” and “geology”) mean “earth; ground; soil; land” (Ge 6:4; Nu 1:1; Mt 2:6; 5:5; 10:29; 13:5), although in some cases they may stand in a figurative sense for the people of the earth, as at Psalm 66:4 and Revelation 13:3. Both ?oh·lam′ (Heb.) and ai·on′ (Gr.) relate basically to a period of time of indefinite length. (Ge 6:3; 17:13; Lu 1:70) Ai·on′ may also signify the “system of things” characterizing a certain period, age, or epoch. (Ga 1:4) Che′ledh (Heb.) has a somewhat similar meaning and may be rendered by such terms as “life’s duration” and “system of things.” (Job 11:17; Ps 17:14) Oi·kou·me′ne (Gr.) means the “inhabited earth” (Lu 21:26),

Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?

The Bible doesn't tell us the earth is round.

if anything, the Bible says the earth is flat.

Isaiah 41:9

I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest CORNERS I called you. I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.

Isaiah 11:12

And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS of the earth.

Revelation 7:1

After this I saw four angels standing at the FOUR CORNERS of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.

Revelation 20:8

And will go out to deceive the nations in the FOUR CORNERS of the earth鈥擥og and Magog鈥攖o gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore.

1 Samuel 2:8

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the PILLARS OF THE EARTH are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?
I believe in everything and nothing.
Sad when you give someone exactly what they ask for, yet still deny it, even as it sits in front of them.

Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?
It's not. It's flat. Because I said so.

Now go get a switch, for quoting the Bible out of context!
Same reason I believe in Creation - I can see it. I see creation and I know there must be a Creator. I can see that the earth is round from satellite photos.Creationists, why do you believe the earth is round?
You're proficient at taking verses out of context.
A fifth grader could tell you they are metaphors
Ends of the earth means never ending.

Edit: Did He say that humans have two ears, two eyes, a mouth, and a nose in the Bible? I believe we do.
Lol, circles don't have corners. The Bible is wrong again.
Those are all just expressions...
i'm an athiest and even i know that "four corners" and "ends of the earth" is just a phrase/metaphor...

i don't support christianity, it's just i don't want us athiests looking bad... and you make us look bad...
I love all the "they are out of context" or "metaphors" comments

Do you hear that when they quote the bible to fit their agenda?

EDIT:

"It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth"

Circle is two-dimensional

A SPHERE [which is what the earth is] is three-dimensional

Once again, theists FAIL
I realize the Bible does not say the earth is round. It is not a book to teach science. It only teaches the spiritual. What was written about the earth was spiritual, not physical.
In the context of the times it was. the known world was very small and there were only a few who had seen it.

No crime there.

People do not know what they do not know. The bible never mentioned Google or emails. Does that mean computers and the internet do not exist?
Guessed you missed the passage where it clearly states the earth is round.

Isaiah 40:22

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,

and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers;

that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain,

and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Clearly states, circle of the earth. And the four corners, take a look at a compass. The four corners are N, S, E, W. The four cardinal points of all navigation since man began to write.
The Noble Quran

[079:030] He made the earth egg-shaped. (A.K.A Geoid)

[079:031] From it, He produced its own water and pasture.

[079:032] He established the mountains.

[079:033] All this to provide life support for you and your animals.
Those are all metaphors. "It is he who sits above the circle of the earth," Isaiah 40:20
The moom, the sun and many balls are round, it is proper to refer to any thing round as having four corners, that does not make it flat, it just sections it. Isa.40:22; Isaiah knows it can be refered to as having a circle around its roundness.
Most understand that the four corners of the earth have to do with directions, not physical corners of the earth. Even if the earth was flat, who says it would have to be rectangular, rather than a circle( which has no corners)?

Most also understand that the ends of the earth just means locations far from where you are.

My question becomes why don't you know this, or is it just voluntary ignorance and a travesty of logic, just to get your point across.

... and if anything, pillars of the earth, implies the earth has an orderly position, as the theologician Issac Newton pointed out in his theory of gravitation.
Well it is easier to believe than the universe was created spontaneously out of nothing aka the big-bang theory.
I do believe the earth is round. Do any of these verses say the earth is round? No. Do any of them specifically say it is flat? No. And besides I can see satellite images, I have faith, just like I have faith in God, and there are Christian scientists out there.

And all those verses about the ends of the earth, well there are ends to the earth. Different ridges, mountains. And the earth is not perfectly round.

God bless.
4 corners of a compass. N S E W are the four corners

Isaiah 40:22 He sit enthroned above the circle-arch-or globe of the earth....or far above this round earth.(depending upon which bible you may have)

Again, misinterpreted the bible.

God created the world in 6 literal days. I find that very easy to believe, which means nothing to you. You cannot understand how I even believe in God.
First of all nowhere in any of the verses you quoted doe it say that the earth is flat. Secondly the Bible calls the earth a circle. The last time I looked a circle is round. So It does say the earth is round. Third, have you ever looked at a map of the world? How many corners does it have? Forth, what does the shape of the earth have to do with how it was created or how long it took to do it?
Hebrew chuwg

Isaiah 40:22
I think this is a perspective thing. From man's point of view the earth does have corners and ends. From God's point of view, it's round.

I don't think you accurately refuted Quite Bu because the fact is that the Bible still says that the earth is round. Whether you say it's a circle or a sphere, both of those are round. I don't have a problem with "circle of the ocean" because when viewed from far away, the earth is mostly water and it does follow a round shape.

How about this verse:

Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, [and] hangeth the earth upon nothing.

This is an incredible insight - how could the writer have known that the earth was hung "upon nothing"? Does any other holy book say that the earth is supspended in space?

Is this not proof that the Earth is flat?

You can always depend on the Bible for Proof that the Earth is flat: Before you slam me look at the proof I have presented here:

Here is my Proof:

Daniel 4:10 Thus [were] the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof [was] great. [11] The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:

Prov 8:27 - When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

Isa 40:22 - It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Mat 4:8 - Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them

Job 38:13 - That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? Job 11:09 - The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

Deut 13:7 - Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; Deut 28:49 - The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; ... Deut 28:64 - And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.

Psa 93:1 - The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

1 Sam 2:8 - He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

Isa 24:18 - And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.

Joshua 10:13 - And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

EX 20:4 - Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.EX 25:12 - And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it.

Believers in the Bible have always known these verses and how it is proof that the Earth is Flat. But the reason I presented these scriptures is in the hops of converting a few Agnostics and Atheists.

And unless you Agnostics and Atheists have faith to believe the Bible is the God breathed word for word of God, you are headed to an eternal flame in hell. This has to be so, because this justice reflects the perfect LOVE of GOD. I hope I have convinced a few of you with these scriptures from the unadulterated Inspired Holy Bible that these things are so. You cannot just pick and choose which words you like in the Bible, as they are all God Breathed. And now you all know like Christians, that the Earth is flat. Was this a convincing effort on my part? I know some of you were thinking is this guy nuts? No, I have the wisdom of God, of the Holy Bible, hidden way down deep in my heart. Say Hallelujah to the Bible. Is this not proof that the Earth is flat?
While you have got to be a troll, it only takes going to the beach and watching a ship sail over the horizon for you to figure out that the earth is curved, as we've known for hundreds of years.
You need to take a class on Bible literature and find out the definition of hyperbole.

For example "ends of the earth" means in all directions of the continent and has nothing to do with geometry. Is this not proof that the Earth is flat?
Well if it's in the Bible I guess you have to believe it unless you're a satan loving ******.

You're not a satan loving ******, are you?
Well, hello Edgar Allen. Is this not proof that the Earth is flat?
Mumbo Jumbo
.

You think by taking verses out of context you can prove anything

F A I L . . .

.
I am fairly certain that no one will be converted via that... and I'm pretty sure most Christians think the Earth is round.
crawl back in your cave
What a waste of space. I meant you, not the page of text you left behind.
I challenge you to a race around the world by foot.

If I fall off the world...then yes, it is flat.
RUN! IT'S A TROLL! AAAAHHHH!!!!!
What on Earth makes you think people would read that wall of text?
The earth is topologicaly equivalent with a flat surface , it is allowed to prick a little hole in the ozon sphere then stretch the surface over the hole in all directions. That will result in a flat surface.
the bible uses alot of metaphors just like us humans do for "ends of the earth" but when it comes to facts there are many scriptures that sounds like this....

Isaiah 40:22 "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

Im sorry your heart is hardened from even a chance that the bible is reliable....but every so called contradiction has been proven to not be a contradiction. The Bible is 99.9 percent accurate and has stood the test of time. Only book to do so. It is more historically reliable then all the ancient philosophers.

Where did you get this mountain to the 3rd heaven stuff? In that time the earth was considered the first heaven, the sky the second, and spiritual heaven as the third. And the bible clearly states that you cannot see that one until death...if you are saved.
dude if you really believe that the earth is flat you need to go back to school, and stop getting your education from the bible. while it is a great book for ethics and stories, thats all it is in there are stories.

Creationists: Why do you believe the earth is spherical?

1 Samuel 2:8

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the PILLARS OF THE EARTH are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.

Job 9:6

it is I who hold its PILLARS firm.

Excuse you...they decided not to pick and choose these parts for their cafeteria-style Bible choosing.
The Earth is not spherical. Because it's circumference at the equator is greater than at any other place on the globe. Because of centrifugal force it is squashed down at the equator.Creationists: Why do you believe the earth is spherical?
I see you did your home work.

it should be clear to everybody that the world is FLAT

The language in all of these is clearly figurative.Creationists: Why do you believe the earth is spherical?
Pillars are foundations.

4 corners and North, south, East, and West.

Ends of the Earth means all over the surface.
You might as well nit pick the nuances of santa claus with a five year old...
Zhu po's answer is a win.
I have looked to the ENDS OF THE EARTH, and I can't find my Clementine.

If you hurt my family, I will hunt you to the FOUR CORNERS of the earth.

The earthuake in San Francisco shook the PILLARS OF THE EARTH.
"And that, my liege, is how we know the world to be banana shaped."
By your logics, if your local newspaper list the time of sun raise and sun set for each day, does that mean the newspaper believes in a geocentric universe?

Or if we take about the sun being high in the sky at noon, does that mean we believe the sun is moving around the earth?

The phrase "four corners" comes from the four directions of compass, which exist whether you are on a flat or spherical earth. Originally maps where down with north, south, east and west each at a corner of the map, rather than the way we draw them today with each direction at the side of the map. So the world was considered to have "four corners". In fact, it is still a common phrase today, even though we know the world is a sphere.

Neither does the phrase "end of the earth". It merely refers to something that is beyond the horizon, and usually beyond our experience and knowledge. It is a common phrase used even today, when we know the world is a sphere.

All the scriptures listed show is that people in the Bible days spoke and though much the same way we do today. And they often use phrase that are based on the way that the world looks to a casual observer rather then phrase that are 100% scientifically accurate. The Bible was never intended to be a book of science and to explain the nature of geography or physics. But rather is a book that talks about the nature of God, man, sin and salvation. The other subjects, like the shape of the world, are pointless to the subject.
*sigh* troll.

"Ends of the earth": To the farthest points in all directions, as in from America, the "ends of the earth" would be around the middle east.

"Pillars of the earth": A figurative way of saying that God keeps the planet from falling apart(from earthquakes, etc). I don't see how "pillars" would suggest a flat earth.

"Four corners of the earth": Even today, it is understood to be as far as you can go North, South, East, and West. Even when people DID think the earth was flat, they held it to be circle-shaped, so they NEVER thought it had literal corners to begin with.

Do "young earth" Christian fundamentalists still also believe the Earth is flat because it's in the Bible??

Job 38:12-13; "take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it"

Daniel 4:10-11;The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and its height was great. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.

Matthew 4:1-12;"The devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them"

Revelation 7:1;After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on the earth or sea or against any tree.

Revelation 20:8;and will come out to deceive the nations which are at the four corners of the earth, that is, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.

1 Samuel 2:8; for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

Job 9:6;who shakes the earth from its place, and its pillars tremble.Do "young earth" Christian fundamentalists still also believe the Earth is flat because it's in the Bible??
What Im wondering is how fundamentalists can say that the bible is the word of god and it is all true, but then when they are confronted by discrepant info they argue that that bit is metaphor...well then...ok, maybe it's all metaphor? But, no... that's right...it's the word of god...so it has to be true...except for when it conflicts with undeniable evidence...then it's a metaphor...

too convoluted and inconsistent for me

Christianity DID believe the earth was flat at the time of Galileo...he nearly got burned at the stake for saying otherwise

he had to take it back to save his skin
If the earth has four corners, then it is built on a plane and cannot be a sphere. Spheres have either no corners or an infinite number of corners.

This means the Sun, the planets, and everything in the universe revolves around the earth; and anything which teaches otherwise teaches the damnation of the devil.Do "young earth" Christian fundamentalists still also believe the Earth is flat because it's in the Bible??
No we do not believe the earth is flat and the scriptures you used does not mention the earth is flat at all.

The four corners means the whole earth not that its flat.

One can see you have never read the bible and just grabed any word that appeared to be talking about the earth being flat.
Isn't there something in there ,vaguely, about creation of a greater light (the sun) and a lesser light (the moon).

Do creationists teach that the moon is not a light, but a reflector of light?

EDIT:

Ahh.. here it is

Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."Do "young earth" Christian fundamentalists still also believe the Earth is flat because it's in the Bible??
This isn't a very good point. I like the whole geocentricism argument instead. Especially since we have direct quotes from both the Vatican and Martin Luther saying that anyone who believed that the earth traveled around the sun is going to hell.
In my Opinion:

Amazing how Galileo was Threatened with Death by The Religious of the day....

For Stating The World was a Globe!!!

The 'Believers' then, Obviously thought it Flat...

Wonder where they got that Idea then!?

The Bible!!!

.
It seems not everybody understands the difference between a circle (flat, round) and sphere (3D, round).

I wonder if they know the difference between a square and a cube.
1) why do you care what Christians believe? (It's nice you think about us, though).

2) nothing in the verses you mentioned say that there is a flat Earth. You're grasping at straws.
The Bible doesn't talk about the earth being flat. The language used in the scriptures you quoted is figurative.
The Bible also speaks of the circle of the earth. That means round to me.
This is speaking figuratively, not literally. I thought anybody would understand that.
It may not say flat but it defiantly describes square.
Amazing the excuses they have .
Its a proven fact that the earth is round and back then they had know idea what we know now so why does everyone pick apart the bible that was done before us. (were you there??)
Are you a flat earther?
Interesting to note that God referred to his world as being a sphere (Is. 40:22) centuries before the greatest minds of Columbus' day thought it was flat.

This was just before the Reformation. People couldn't yet read the Bible in their own language, or they would have straightened the contemporary geniuses minds out.

If you take a globe and cut it opened and lay it flat on a table, you'll notice that the world has four corners. (brilliant isn't it?)

So now we have the Bible talking about the 200 million man army coming from China at the end of the age. (Rev. 9:16) And the coming of a cashless society where you cannot buy anything without the 'market of the beast'. (Rev. 13:16-17) Of course It will once again take the Christian to straighten out the contemporary brilliant minds of our spiritually blind intellectuals.

We won't take the credit for this. We will give all the Glory to our God, and his son Jesus Christ.

But when He comes, will He find FAITH on the earth?
The 4 corners are referring to the 4 cardinal directions you historical genius you, and the first verse you posted from the book of Job is actually a metaphor, or perhaps you think that mankind was so primitive in that era that he would not be able to understand the concepts of metaphor and satire?

You accuse Christians of denying scientific facts (The Big Bang Fact? sorry, havent read that book. Perhaps you can point me to it for my 'enlightenment) yet you take the Bible out of context in an effort to discredit our claims.

Heres an idea. Try reading the Bible in the context of which it was written and then present an argument.
remember what they did to galileo? because they were following the Bible. and yes the Bible says it's flat, what you say is proof.

so God who created the earth himself thinks it was flat? absurd.

the only conclusion is that the Bible is not the word of God, it can't be.

and even if it said the earth was round: when you read the Bible, it just does not feel like God talking. New York Times feels a lot more like God.
The bit about the circle of the Earth means nothing, as a circle is NOT a sphere.

They did indeed believe the Earth was flat. The verses above prove it, especially the ones about the pillars and shaking earth by its edges.

The contradiction is, is it a circle, or is it a square with four corners?

As far as sitting above the circle of the earth and seeing all, well, if it's a flat circle, you can do that. If it's a round sphere, you can't see all sides at once, no matter from how far away or any angle. One side will always be hidden. That is geometry. Or is math as unimportant as science?
Remember that long ago all the continents were one big one?

No, the Bible doesn't say the earth is flat.

It says that at one point people during the end times will be sleeping in one part of the earth and working in another part.

You can't have that great a difference without time zones.

This was after the continents separated...
You can't underline the word "flat" in any of that because it's not there. Having four corners is figurative, not literal. It actually means east, west, north, and south.
In Isaiah 40:22, it implies that the earth is round. "He [the Lord] sits enthroned above the circle of the earth" ... .......... This allows for the concept that the earth is a sphere.

Cheers!
Look idiot those are all metaphors for the end times. They dont suggest the earth is flat. Even with the earth flat that doesnt neccesarily mean its in the shape of a square.
bible never say's "flat" don't add it says:

Isaiah 40:22:

"He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth"

last I checked a circle is "round" a sphere.
none of those verses say anything about it being flat. that is assumptions made by people like you.
1. The Bible never says that the Earth is flat.

2. Job 38 is one of the coolest passages in the whole Bible. Ever read the whole chapter? God (who is speaking here) isn't literally saying to "take the Earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it." He is simply illustrating that Job, a mere man, doesn't know more than He does.

3. People STILL say "ends of the Earth," like it's said in Daniel. It doesn't mean they think the Earth is flat.

4. The passage in Matthew describes a supernatural, not natural, event.

5. People still say "corners of the Earth." In Revelation, it's talking about the four points of the compass. This is obvious from the fact that the angels hold back the four winds.

6. As for 1 Samuel and Job, I don't know where you've been, but the Earth IS supported by a "pillar." We call it the invisible axis. I don't see how this is saying that the Earth is flat.

The idea that the majority of people EVER believed that the Earth is flat is a myth. You may find allusions to it in figurative language in literature, but nothing beyond that. Most people believed that the Earth was round. See Isaiah 40:22.

Edit: And I know that it was all of the atheists who can't STAND when Christians answer a question addressed to THEM who gave all the thumbs-down and decided to gang up on the question, but I would like to add that you guys aren't as smart as you think you are.

Galileo was NEVER imprisoned for believing the Earth was round. It was already well-established by then. Geez, not only are many of the atheists who answered biblically illiterate, but they're ignorant of history. Galileo was first imprisoned for his belief in heliocentrism, was released for a time, did his research, then he was finally put on house arrest for making fun of the pope who was kind enough to sponsor his research. And if ANY of you would exercise that "critical thinking" that you're so proud of having, you would know all this!

  • What are the Seven Pillars of the House which Wisdom has built?

This Question is inspired by these words of truth... As we seek for the truth here, what comes to mind dear ones : ) ?

Wisdom HAS built her house, she has hewn out her seven pillars: Proverbs 9:1

If THESE PILLARS have been hewn out by Wisdom of old, that would mean they are set in stone right ? ; )

Through wisdom is a house built; and by understanding it is established:

And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

    Pro. 24:3-4

Lastly, what are these Pillars holding up ?

One last thought on these matters are...

He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for THE PILLARS of the earth are the LORD's, and he HAS set the world upon them. 1Samuel 2:8

Have a wonderful and love ~ filled day, beloved of God *smiles*What are the Seven Pillars of the House which Wisdom has built?
Well lets have a go... I believe they are virtues, knowledge that is described with words to deliver the one that understands and lives them Gods strength. Who can name and give life to them? They support the roof to keep out the rein of man's pain. What are the Seven Pillars of the House which Wisdom has built?
Sounds like something from bleep, bloop and the flippedy doos from middle earth. the seven pillars are the wild magic of the white gold and the mastery of the lords wards and wands. What are the Seven Pillars of the House which Wisdom has built?
Good question. I gave you a star. I don't know but will come back later to see what answers you get.

Wu Xing elements out of balance?

I've been doing a bit of reading lately about the Five Element Theory (Wu Xing) which says that we are essentially made up of five different elements or qualities. I've noticed that I seem to have a HUUUGE imbalance of metal (organisation, perfectionism- not surprising, as I was born in a metal year) and a not quite as big imbalance of water (introversion) in my life, and it's pretty much destroyed my wood (motivation and drive) and fire (passion, emotion and creativity) elements. I think my earth quality is ok, it's just chugging away, but not quite as much as metal or water.

I'm curious is anyone has any advice on how to rectify this? Any personal feng shui or wu xing tips for bringing my elements back into balance? I'd like only serious answers, please.

    Four Pillars:

You need to take up Qigong to balance out, something like Wild Goose or Ba Duan Jin.
None of those are, of course, elements.

But, if it keeps you amused....

On the other hand you could work on those shortcomings without blaming the day/year you were bornWu Xing elements out of balance?
Buy any good book on Feng Shui; I would recommend:

'Practical Feng Shui. Simon Brown. A Wood Lock Book,1997.

One should be able to obtain a copy from the local library.
I wanted to make fun of you but I was unwilling to do the research.

I am sure others have it covered anyways.Wu Xing elements out of balance?
Cold soak in a tub with mineral salts. Be clean first.

Which historical TV series or movies do you recommend?

I very much enjoy historically situated TV series and movies. I've seen Gladiator, Rome and The Pillars of the Earth. And now I'm out of episodes! It doesn't have to be situated in the middle ages or ancient culture, anything with costumes is fine by me :) Which series or movies do you recommend?Which historical TV series or movies do you recommend?
I recommend HBO's new series Game of Thrones. It is a fantasy series with heavy historical influences. Costume Designer Michele Clapton has drawn on Medieval influences from Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Japan, and Africa to come up with the costumes for this series. I'm a big fan of the books so I'm excited to see what HBO does with the series.

Fellow Christians, do you believe that the Earth is flat and the Sun revolves around the Earth?

Before I begin, I would like to say that I am not saying the Bible is fake, or that the Bible shouldn't be believed, but it should be read both literally and metaphorically...

Samuel Rowbotham supported the notion of a flat Earth, based on literal interpretation of certain biblical passages. After Rowbotham's death in 1884, his followers established the Universal Zetetic Society. In 1956, Samuel Shenton took over the Universal Zetetic Society, which would later become the Flat Earth Society. The Flat Earth Society took the position that the Apollo Moon landings were a hoax, because the photos of Earth taken from Apollo 8 was spherical and not flat. The Flat Earth Society still exists today under president Daniel Shenton...

These are the Biblical references that the Flat Earth Society thinks supports the notion of a flat Earth, because if taken literally, the Bible says the Earth is flat, has four corners, has ends, possibility of falling of the edges of the Earth, about a tree so high that it was visible from any place on Earth, the Earth is set on pillars and cannot move.

Isaiah 40:22: It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth...

Isaiah 11:12: ...the four corners of the earth.

Revelation 7:1: ...I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth...

Job 38:13: That it might take hold of the ends of the earth...

Jeremiah 16:19: ...the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth...

Daniel 4:11: The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.

Psalm 93:1 and Psalm 96:10: ...the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

Psalm 104:5: Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Job 9:6: Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

Job 38:4: Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?

Job 37:3: He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

Job 28:24: For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;.

1 Samuel 2:8: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

Also, the Flat Earth Society believes that the Sun orbits around the Earth, based on this Biblical reference:

Ecclesiastes 1:5: The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/febible.htmFellow Christians, do you believe that the Earth is flat and the Sun revolves around the Earth?
The belief that the earth was the centre of the universe was upheld by Ptolemy (born circa 85, died circa 165). This view was held by most educated Greeks since the time of Aristotle and was adopted by the Catholic Church. Then, in 1543, Copernicus put forward an alternative model to Ptolemy's universe and Galileo was tried for heresy by the Catholic Church in 1633 for advocating the Copernican model. Astonishingly, it took the Roman Catholic Church till 1992 to finally acknowledge that Galileo was right and they were wrong to condemn him and put him under arrest. 499 years to admit they were wrong!

Isaiah 40:22 disproves the flat earth idea and the expression about the sun rising and setting and going to the place from which it arose is simply a way of describing what the eye sees when the sun rises and then sets. We still say the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, but we don't mean the sun moves round the earth! To answer your question, no, Christians do not advocate a flat earth or Ptolemy's idea that the earth was the centre of the universe.
There are some who call themselves Christians who believe in Creationism and ID, they will believe anything as long as it is in the bible. So they must believe the earth is flat and that the Sun orbits around the Earth or they they are just liars.Fellow Christians, do you believe that the Earth is flat and the Sun revolves around the Earth?
LOL christians may believe in god and jesus and stuff, but they arent dumb enough to belive the earth is flat.

Theres pictures taken from space shuttles of the earth. and its definitely round. -.-

    Science wins this time.
Perhaps you can attend the Christian Flat Earth Conference next year. It was just over a week ago.Fellow Christians, do you believe that the Earth is flat and the Sun revolves around the Earth?
...you answer is actually found in Scripture.
Ganon will tell you many things, even sometimes mix in half truths, but rest assured they are all attempts to bring fear and deceit into your heart.
The "Flat Earth" is how Rationality perceived Reality in the radle of its existence. Not only the Bible recalls earliest civilization seeing the Earth as flat, but the Hindu as well... The perception of a Flat Earth as literal, but belong to that era.

In the spiritual sense, the Flat Earth is how a child starts perceiving the world around it. Much later, the child starts cracking its head why the Universe is accelerating its expanding and all that.

In all, the Flat Earth is a metaphor of a phase of the maturing of Life. So, Daniel Shenton is either behaving toward others as if they are idiots, or he is "behaving as if the world is flat" - and idiot himself. In any case, that is not different from what Tom Cruise is doing...

There will always be idiots around...
You haven't done your word studies my friend. Isaiah, and Job's references to the "Sphere of the Earth," refer to not a round disk, but to a round earth.

Also remember, Job, (the earliest book of the bible) knew nothing about science. It is quoted later in Job that the earth does indeed go around the sun. Now how would Job know that in roughly 3000 b.c.?

The Bible is the story of God's redemptive plan for man, not a science book, though, as I said, if you do your word studies, (I suggest you purchase Kiel %26amp; Dielitche O.T. Hebrew commentaries) you'd find most of your references are erroneous.
This argument is based on the KJV and not the Hebrew translation. Secondly Isaiah 40:22 does not claim earth is round. Please read it again.

It states that he (God) sits upon the CIRLCE OF EARTH. The word translated ?circle? in the English is `chuwg` it means to be round or the vault of the heavens. So it isn't talking about earth. It is speaking about the firament which does appear as a circle or round from space.
First about the Earth being flat the bible does not say that. People already believed that when they heard the Bible and so misinterpreted some passages: the four corners of the world are the four cardinal points, the foundations are the forces that maintain the earth, the circle is the ecuador.

About the earth being in the center of the Universe, no one can actually say if it is or not because you have a moving system inside another moving side inside another moving system.... and so on. So you cannot determine if something has absolute motion, or somethings absolute position. The part with being in the centre probably was a misinterpretation of the earth being the most important thing in the universe (the only planet with life...duhhh) . And the Ecclesiastes says something very simple and true: the sun always rises from the East and goes down on the West. You can check with a compass if you do not believe.
Nope. I do not believe that the earth if flat.

The bible tends to give us a different picture because our meaning of the word earth is

different and the OT people's meaning of the word earth is different.

In the olden days, usage of the word earth was limited to the land crust.

Also, people lived on one single continent (Europe+Asia+Africa).

Also, OT people never thought that the earth was flat and that seas surrounded the earth.

If they had tought that the earth was flat and that seas surounded the earth crust

then they would have never thought about crossing the red sea to go to a different land.

Also, most of the bible verses are poetic in nature and hence use strong metaphors.

We should not consider them as scientific facts.

Last but not the least, do not think that every word in the standard bible was inspired by God.
    Of course not.

Even people who are used to navigate and use the compass speaks about the four corners of the earth. It is a navigational concept that is old as man. The magnetic compass has been known for thousands of years, North, South, East, and West, the four corners of the earth.
Stop picking bits and pieces out of the Bible and claiming it to be a "fact" I look at the Bible as a reference tool personally. We must remember the Bible was in fact written by MAN,though "directed by God" these things may have been revised to suite kings/rulers and translated during a period when in fact if King James didn't "like something" the scholar was KILLED. So to say the earth is flat because "to be taken literally" well go back and come on with another line of defecation my friend, and let's see if it's any better than this?
The only word that's in any way connected to the word metaphor in the Bible is "parable".

A "parable" is a short moral story; a fable. Saying the Earth has four corners, or is a circle, does not have anything to do with morals.

So, if they were speaking metaphorically, why wouldn't they say so? It doesn't mention metaphor at all in the Bible.

It WAS meant to be taken literally. It's been proven wrong. People still believe in that joke of a book.
She was as big as a house!

Should this be taken metaphorically or literally?

    GROW UP!

The point of literary genre is a person is supposed to be MATURE enough to know when to use what for what instead of truncating words and phrases that serve no purpose.

    GROW UP!

Obviously, you are not mature enough to know the difference.

This is why so many Christians say......."CONTEXT" !
Religion is just a way of making people feel safe and secure about the afterlife, no one wants to hear that they just die, they want it to be a happy ending like a movie, so even if there is fool hard proof (there is a lot of fool hard proof) to prove that most religions are wrong they are not going to let reason and logic get in the way of their fairy tale stories.

A man cross dresses in a womans white dress, imprints it with a few gold symbols, is told by a another cross dressing man that his important and becomes a priest. (same process with pope) I dont get how priests and bishops or even the pope is holy, they make a living out of giving people false hope and often scamming them out of donations. Yes most of these donations go to charity but you dont need to be a church or even religious to be kind or generous, this is a idea made by the church.

    Christianity

The belief that a cosmic jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh, drink his blood and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.......

    yeah makes perfect sense

Bible literalist group believes that Earth is flat and that NASA is a big lie, what do you think?

The Flat Earth Society (FES) is a group of Bible literalists that believes that the Earth is an unmoving flat circular disc that is situated on pillars, has corners and ends, and they seem to believe that NASA is a big lie, because the photos of Earth taken from space doesn't support their belief of a flat Earth, and they claim that their belief is true because it is written in the Bible...

This is FES's Flat Earth model, it depicts Antarctica as an ice wall surrounding a disk shaped Earth: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/66/Flat_Earth.png/600px-Flat_Earth.png

I'm a Catholic, but I don't take the Bible completely literally like the FES does, I'm not saying that the Bible shouldn't be believed, but it should be taken both literally and metaphorically, and the Bible shouldn't be treated as a science textbook, anyway, these are the Biblical verses from the King James Version Bible that the FES thinks supports their beliefs of a flat Earth:

Isaiah 40:22: It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Isaiah 11:12: And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Revelation 7:1: And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

Job 38:13: That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

Jeremiah 16:19: O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.

Daniel 4:11: The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:

Psalm 93:1: The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

Psalm 96:10: Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.

Psalm 104:5: Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Job 9:6: Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

Job 38:4: Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

Job 37:3: He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

    Job 28:24: For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;

1 Samuel 2:8: He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.Bible literalist group believes that Earth is flat and that NASA is a big lie, what do you think?
    Wall of text warning.

The FES is flat when it comes to thinking, logic, and knowledge. Their interpretation of scripture is one of cherry picking only what they want to believe.

    That's my opinion.
too long. did not read. but the hearth IS flat, and nasa is indeed a big lie. where they mistake is that it's not circle, it's square.Bible literalist group believes that Earth is flat and that NASA is a big lie, what do you think?
You have no sense of what the Bible teaches or says, you are projecting upon the Bible your own ignorance.
Don't you know that if you unzip the earth and lay it out after taking out the styrofoam, it becomes flat?Bible literalist group believes that Earth is flat and that NASA is a big lie, what do you think?
I don't think anything of it?

Why do you keep posting questions concerning the Flat Earth Society? Why do you care?
Holy cow. How backwards are these people? Someone needs to take em on a cruise around the damned spherical world
    you asked this yesterday %26gt;.%26gt;

my thoughts are the same, they are nutjobs.
    they do not know god
They're idiots. In fact it was quite well established even in the Middle Ages, most people knew the world was actually round. If these morons want to believe the world is flat thats fine but thats the most classic case of people believing theories postulated in the Bible over actual evidence. Also they might need to realise that its not only NASA that have shown how the earth isnt flat.
What does God say about the earth?

    The earth is dry land.

What does God say about the seas?

The seas are the waters around the dry land,

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. Gen 1:9-10 (KJV)

    ----------------------

Every contentent has 4 corners, and in the beginning it seems to me that the earth was all one land not 7 lands as it is now.
This makes me almost as incredulous as when Obama charged the head of NASA with "outreach to the muslim world" as one of his main duties. I suppose the "disproving the Flat Earth" project is coming to an end.

It is also possible that the mistakes one could make by basing their life on a literal interpretation of the Bible may be less eternally damaging than the mistakes one could make by not doing so...just my opinion, though. Throughout the eternal ages, as we walk and talk with a literal Savior, we may get the explanation of why...

If we never make it there, we will never know. Maybe the insecurity of being "right" about science, but 'wrong" about God is too much for these Flat Earth types.

Why don't fundies & creationists argue against anyone who declares the earth is round & moving??

Their infallible Bible tells them that the Earth is flat--standing on pillars %26amp; is immovable why don't they berate those who doubt the Bible??--they got Galileo to recant--don't tell me they have conceded that their Bible might be in error!!!--OH NO!!!

Samual1-Ch2v8 -: for the pillars of the

earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

Psalm 104:5 He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

http://www.ronaldbrucemeyer.com/rants/06…Why don't fundies %26amp; creationists argue against anyone who declares the earth is round %26amp; moving??
Apostle Jeff gave an almost reasonable answer. Any believer who is willing to admit that the Bible was written by men who were 'divinely inspired' but not infallible is okay with me, as long as they are open minded enough to accept that this makes room for a 4.7B year old earth, evolution and all other widely accepted scientific knowledge.

After all, the question was directed at fundies and creationists, who routinely deny widely accepted scientific knowledge because of specific passages of the Bible.
i dunno, i hate to side with the cultists on this but thats kinda a weak scripture to prove the bible says the world is flatWhy don't fundies %26amp; creationists argue against anyone who declares the earth is round %26amp; moving??
that's a very very good question.

i think that's a weak quote to say the world is flat. but it does make a point about the earth revolving both on its axis and around the sun...
Why should we? The Bible tells us in the Book of Job, that the Earth is round and hangs on nothing! It is thousands of years old and was written while dinosaurs were still on the Earth and while Scientists thought that the World was flat. You are just misinterpreting the Bible. You got to remember that the Bible was written by men, who were influenced by the Holy Ghost, for men. You also have to read the whole Chapter so that you do not take it out of context. What Psalm 104 means is this, God created everything and has set everything in unmovable order. They are out of Man's control. If you would have read a little farther, you would have read that God even created the Sea Dinosaurs, in verse 28!

Please read the whole Bible with an open mind instead of prejudging it by what other people think, with their predetermined ideas and false philosophy and false teachings. Why don't fundies %26amp; creationists argue against anyone who declares the earth is round %26amp; moving??
    Hmmm.
You are quoting from poetic passages; poetry is not for the purpose of accuracy. The Bible actually teaches otherwise...

Here is something from Dr. Jason Lisle:

The Bible indicates that the earth is round. One verse we can look at is Isaiah 40:22, where it mentions the “circle of the earth.” From space, the earth always appears as a circle since it is round. This matches perfectly with the Bible.

Another verse to consider is Job 26:10, where it teaches that God has “inscribed” a circle on the surface of the waters at the boundary of light and darkness. This boundary between light and darkness is where evening and morning occur. The boundary is a circle since the earth is round.

A very interesting verse to consider is Job 26:7, which states that God “hangs the earth on nothing.” This might make you think of God hanging the earth like a Christmas tree ornament, but hanging it on empty space. Although this verse is written in a poetic way, it certainly seems to suggest that the earth floats in space. And indeed the earth does float in space. We now have pictures of the earth taken from space that show it floating in the cosmic void. The earth literally hangs upon nothing, just as the Bible suggests.

The Bible indicates in several places that the universe has been “stretched out” or expanded. For example, Isaiah 40:22 teaches that God stretches out the heavens like a curtain,

and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. This would suggest that the universe has actually increased in size since its creation. God is stretching it out, causing it to expand.

Now, this verse must have seemed very strange when it was first written. The universe certainly doesn’t look as if it is expanding. After all, if you look at the night sky tonight, it will appear about the same size as it did the previous night, and the night before that.

In fact, secular scientists once believed that the universe was eternal and unchanging. The idea of an expanding universe would havebeen considered nonsense to most scientists of the past. So it must have been tempting for Christians to reject what the Bible teaches about the expansion of the universe.

I wonder if any Christians tried to “reinterpret”

Isaiah 40:22 to read it in an unnatural way so that they wouldn’t have to believe in an expanding universe. When the secular world believes one thing and the Bible teaches another, it is always tempting to think that God got the details wrong. But God is never wrong.

Most astronomers today believe that the universe is indeed expanding. In the 1920s, astronomers discovered that virtually all clusters of galaxies appear to be moving away from all other clusters; this indicates that the entire universe is expanding. You can think of this like points on a balloon. As the balloon is inflated, all the points move farther away from each other. If the entire universe was being stretched out, the galaxies would all be moving away; and that is what they actually appear to be doing.

It is fascinating that the Bible recorded the idea of an expanding universe thousands of years before secular science came to accept the idea.
    WTF?

Galileo and Copernicus are 500 years dead now. There has been the knowledge of the earth being a sphere since Ptolemy! What makes you think you can make the arrogant assumption that all christians believe the earth is flat? Get your nose out of that skeptic ann. Bible. GEEZ! Ever heard of the straw man?

Check into it. You are a dunce if you make such assumptions.
The Hebrew word for "moved" in the verse you quoted, can refer to the earth's established ever-abiding existence in the universe, rather than its physical movement. This is demonstrated in Psalm 16:8 where the same Hebrew word and tense is used, but referring to a person. "I have set the LORD always before me: because [he is] at my right hand, I shall not be moved." (Psa 16:8) Obviously David is not saying that he must forever remain physically stationary, but that he shall abide forever. So too, can the earth of Psalm 104:5 be understood.
You don't know anything of history do you?
because Mr Jesus.........oh never mind i start and i get banned from answers AGAIN and i am running out of users names
    ha
this proves that there is hope, as even the most fundamentalist of christians are forced to accept some passages as metaphor. We just need to show them how many passages.

This is why i said the Bible says the world is Flat?

The Bible says: The Earth is flat!

The sections of this article are:

    - The Bible says: The Earth is flat!

    - The flat Earth is established and can never move?! The Sun hurries back to where

    it rises?!

    - The Earth has pillars?!

    - The Earth has Edges?! The wicked might get shaken off of it and fall off in

    - Does Isaiah 40:22 really say that Earth is Round? The Earth is a flat circle?!

    - Christian Theologians' Commentaries that further suggest that the Earth

    is flat.

    - The light of the Universe and the flat earth's dimensions in the Bible.

    - Conclusion.

When it comes to scientific claims, the Bible has the dumbest claims, with all due respect to Jews and Christians. The Bible claims that Earth has four ends and four corners. Nobody can ever think a ball or a cycle to have corners and ends! Only flat items can have corners and ends, and this is exactly what the bible is trying to express regarding the shape of the earth. The earth is not flat, as once thought and it has no corners or ends at all. If Magnetic Poles can be taken as ends or corners of earth, then this definitely opposed to the axis of rotation.

    Genesis 11:1-9

    The Tower of Babel

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.

6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

9 That is why it was called Babel 鈥攂ecause there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Not only these verses are seriously very insulting to Allah Almighty because they present Him as a GOD who feared men, but they also reveal a very serious scientific blunder through suggesting that the earth is both flat and sitting still in the universe - something that is quite contrary to what the Holy Quran teaches.

Aristotle affirms that even the common man in his day could see the rising and lowering of sails as ships sailed into the horizon. Now all those Greeks who read and produced the LXX (and remember, Jesus and Paul quote predominantly from the LXX) should at least make you wonder : How could the common Greek of 350 BC know this and it be a thing hidden 400 years later.
Brother we should agree this thing is totally wrong. The earth is not flat as we know and here the verse which says that the tree raised so high that all the kingdoms could see it but as we know that the earth is round and people on the other side of the world could not see it, no matter how much the tree grows....I don,t want to hurt anybody,s feelings but this verse of Bible says the wrong thing and according to my belief God can never be wrong so these are not the words of God.This is why i said the Bible says the world is Flat?
Some of them could be metaphors but bravo more reasons to detest religion.
No one with any significant amount of scientific training could *possibly* conclude that The Bible means what you claim that it means.

You seem intent on misrepresenting Scripture - often the clear and evident meaning of Scripture - in an effort to discredit The Bible. This demonstrates a tremendous weakness in your position - because if you had a sound position, you would not need to go to such lengths to support it.

Most of your mistakes can be corrected simply by **using an English dictionary**. Please do so and then try again.

There is nothing in all of Scripture that says the earth is flat, and none of the things that you've quoted (and twisted) are valid.

I am a teen and love to read books that take place in the mid evil ages. Can anyone recommend some books?

I want recommendations that are fiction, NOT nonfiction. I can read very involved books that are written beyond my years so don't worry about about that subject. An example of a book that I have read is the Pillars of the Earth. It isn't based in the mid evil ages but it was still based around the same crucial time. Hopefully someone can recommend a great book that I will devour. Thankyou!I am a teen and love to read books that take place in the mid evil ages. Can anyone recommend some books?
I am almost done reading Pillars too, and really like it. You might like the classic Sir Walter's Scott's Ivanhoe or some of the following Arthurian and other medieval fiction that I have enjoyed.

Katherine Kurtz's Deryni novels, I'd start with The Legends of Camber of Culdi Trilogy (Camber of Culdi, Saint Camber, Camber the Heretic) then read The Chronicles of the Deryni Trilogy (Deryni Rising, Deryni Checkmate, High Deryni) and then go from there.

This is Medieval fantasy with Magic, Church corruption, Kings and battles and good characterizations.

Bernard Cornwell has several Medieval novels based on England from about the 6th Century on.

The Saxon Stories, The Warlord Chronicles and The Grail Quest series were all good.

Judith Tarr has a some books of Historical Fantasy books covering the Norman Conquest of Britain:

Rite of Conquest, King's Blood. As well as an Arthurian Fantasy, Kingdom of the Grail that is told from an old Monk's perspective.

    Arthurian Fantasy/Historical Fiction:

    Gillian Bradshaw-

Hawk of May, Kingdom of Summer and In Winter's Shadow, are in her Down the Long Wind Trilogy. Told from the perspective of Gwalchmai (Gawain) half brother to Mordred. More of a Young Adult series.

Another is Island of Ghosts and is written with a Roman influenced perspective.

Jack Whyte The Camulod Chronicles, an alternate take on the Arthurian tale. Loved it!

The Sorcerer Part: Metamorphosis , The Lance Thrower, and The Eagle

Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle: Another very good series with more of a Welsh/celtic flavor.

Taliesin, Merlin, Arthur, Pendragon, Grail, and Avalon. He also has the Celtic Crusades series and his version of Robin Hood series.

Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy- Read it when I was a teen and loved it.

Most of these books fall in the early middle ages from the 5th century onward, a few are later but all I thought very good and worth recommending.I am a teen and love to read books that take place in the mid evil ages. Can anyone recommend some books?
It's not *exactly* Medieval Ages, but it's pretty close. I think you'd really enjoy Tamora Pierce's books, namely her Song of the Lioness series. There are a few series that chronologically come after that one. They're really good.I am a teen and love to read books that take place in the mid evil ages. Can anyone recommend some books?
Aha! you are looking for Timeline by Michael Crichton, I also do not enjoy nonfiction..and this book is very enjoyable and gripping.. yes it is medieval:)
Have you read Crispin or Catherine Called Birdy?

Punching in the stomach leaves no bruises?

I remember reading in either: World Without End OR Pillars of the Earth (or some other Ken Folett book) It said that one of the characters punched the other in the stomach, because he knew it wouldn't leave a bruise..

Is this true? does punching someone in the stomach leave no bruise?

And if yes, can you please tell me the science behind it if you could? as in why and how come?Punching in the stomach leaves no bruises?
False, no matter where you get "punched" you will get a bruise. Whether or not it is visible from the outside depends on the depth of the blood vessels that are damaged do to the injury.

  • Why are we only trying to get creationism taught? Why don't we teach that the earth is flat and stationery?

Clearly the Bible says that God created the heavens and the earth but it also says that the earth is flat and that it doesn't move. I don't get why we creationists are only focusing on Intelligent Design when we should also be trying to get the school boards to teach that the earth is flat and not moving.

I mean it says so in the Bible and the Bible is never ever wrong:

(Job 38:12-13) "take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it

(Matthew 4:1-12) "[T]he devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them"

(Samuel 2:8)"For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, And He has set the world upon them". If you go to any seashore, you are bound to see houses built on pillars, and yet the houses don't move. How strange.

(Psalms 93:1)"The Lord reigns, he is clothed with majesty; The Lord is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established so that it cannotWhy are we only trying to get creationism taught? Why don't we teach that the earth is flat and stationery?
coco is right, you are grabbing passages that are using poetic language.

The Bible indicates that the earth is round. One verse we can look at is Isaiah 40:22, where it mentions the “circle of the earth.” From space, the earth always appears as a circle since it is round. This matches perfectly with the Bible.

A very interesting verse to consider is Job 26:7, which states that God “hangs the earth on nothing.” This might make you think of God hanging the earth like a Christmas tree ornament, but hanging it on empty space. Although this verse is written in a poetic way, it certainly seems to suggest that the earth floats in space; and indeed the earth does float in space. We now have pictures of the earth taken from space that show it floating in the cosmic void. The earth literally hangs upon nothing, just as the Bible suggests.

The Bible indicates in several places that the universe has been “stretched out” or expanded. For example, Isaiah 40:22 teaches that God stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

The idea of an expanding universe would have been considered nonsense to most scientists of the past. So it must have been tempting for Christians to reject what the Bible teaches about the expansion of the universe.

Most astronomers today believe that the universe is indeed expanding. In the 1920s, astronomers discovered that virtually all clusters of galaxies appear to be moving away from all other clusters; this indicates that the entire universe is expanding.

It is fascinating that the Bible recorded the idea of an expanding universe thousands of years before secular science came to accept the idea.

Some Bible critics have claimed that passages like Revelation 7:1 assumes a flat earth since the verse refers to angels standing at the "four corners" of the earth. Actually, the reference is to the cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Similar terminology is often used today when we speak of the sun's rising and setting, even though the earth, not the sun, is doing the moving. Bible writers used the "language of appearance," just as people always have. Without it, the intended message would be awkward at best and probably not understood clearly. When the Bible touches on scientific subjects, it is entirely accurate.
I agree with you, but religion still should not be taught until it is proved outside of a book. just like the "flat earth" theory was.Why are we only trying to get creationism taught? Why don't we teach that the earth is flat and stationery?
And out of all of these verses, where is the word flat? How do you pick up a ball? Do you touch the edges? I have more of a problem with a 40 year old telling me what happened billions and billions of years ago.

I know there are no edges, how do you discribe picking up a ball and shaking it?
why dont we teach christians that earth is clearly round? it clearly says so in science books written by authors who know what theyre talking about.

now how do you know the bible is never wrong? thats what I would love to know? Why are we only trying to get creationism taught? Why don't we teach that the earth is flat and stationery?
There are word,s we understand and word,s we don,t,but

without the spirit of God none will understand a word of the

Bible, this is where you have to have the spirit to lead you

and anyone who is not of God can understand it.

But translation wordings need to be ones which are capable of being understood by the speakers of that translation language. They can be newly coined in the language, as long as they can be understood."" -from someone's blog

And i agree. The Bible talks in metaphors translated from a language that is not english.... hence, translations and understanding solely belongs to the one who does the reading...

I think that in any kind of reading from peotry to prose to novels to research papers,... it requires a high intellect capable of understanding.
For an infallible god, his manifesto sure is packed full of mistakes, lies and just plain stupid stuff.
Well, why dont we teach our kids to kill people who work on Sunday. Thats in the bible too. Also, the bible says that its ok to sell your daughter into slavery, as long as she goes to a neighboring tribe. Why dont they teach that one too ?

I just read a book called 'Pillars Of The Earth' by Ken Follett and want to find a game for PC or 360 that has a strong religious component to it where you build religious cities and buildings and what not. I'm not interested much in warfare in the game but whatever I have to put up with I will.Is there a good Medievail game with a Religious component?
Civilization IV. It's a turned based strategy game where you build up your empire through time, including the medieval era. There is also a medieval "mode" where you skip right to that time period. You get to pick the religion of your empire, and send missionaries to foreign nations as well as your own cities to spread the religion. It also leads to many battles as other nations will not always agree with you. You can also build churches and stuff in each of your cities. It's probably one of the closest games your could find to your subject.

    Enjoy :D

tl;dr Civilization 4, Google it ;)Is there a good Medievail game with a Religious component?
The only one I can think is one of the Total War games. It's a strategy one, and you can earn your reputation with the pope. Not much religion, but it is a medieval game (if you pick Medieval 2: Total War).Is there a good Medievail game with a Religious component?

    No

Atheists, what are you favorite plot holes in the best selling novel of all time?

    My top three are probably:

    1. That the earth is a flat disc, which is rested upon pillars.

    2. That earth never moves, and the sun and all other celestial bodies revolve around it.

    3. The fact that the age of the earth falls quite a bit short of the projected 4.54 billion years that has come to be accepted within the scientific community. (By quite a bit, I'm talking almost 4.54 billion years short of the projected 4.54 billion years)

Dude, here again you have a completely wrong understanding of what scripture says, and you're showing your ignorance.

The Bible doesn't say the earth is a flat disc. It doesn't say it's rested upon pillars. (In fact, it says that the earth hangs on nothing.)

The Bible doesn't say that the earth never moves. This was a claim of some Catholic bishops and the Pope who failed to understand scripture properly and superimposed their own understanding of the world over their understanding of scripture. The Bible never makes such a claim.

We've already discussed your error on the supposed 6,000 year old age of the earth (but you deleted that question.)

You're amazingly, impressively, astoundingly wrong on all of these claims, and seemingly enjoying your ignorance.

Why not look this stuff up on your own?

    -----

Interestingly, the Bible advocates a creation story that is entirely consistent with the Big Bang, but people will concentrate on the failure of the Pope to accept Galileo's discoveries and ignore the Bible's accuracy on things even bigger than Galileo imagined.Atheists, what are you favorite plot holes in the best selling novel of all time?
It's not a plot hole, but I find it interesting that Matthew tell us that when Christ was crucified, there was darkness all over the land for three hours, and "the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent, and many of the saints came out of their graves.

A series of events spoken of so strange, so unusual and so extraordinary that, had they occurred, they must have attracted the attention of the whole world -- especially the amazing scene of the sun's withdrawing his light and ceasing to shine, and thereby causing an almost total darkness near the middle of the day.

How many accounts do we have from historians of that time which mention this phenomenon, so terrible and so serious in its effects as literally to unhinge the planets and partially disorganize the universe... that's right, approximately zero.

Those are hardly holes for a book that never was intended for a science text or factual account. By playing the literalists' games, you lower yourself to their level. All the sacred literature of mankind, from the Homeric Hymns to Popul Voh, to the Mahabharata and much, much more has great value. Myth has wider shoulders than mere fact to carry a greater burden of truth. We are, after all, a story telling species.

Why would you want to lower yourself to the lowest common denominator of believers?
    Here's mine:

On the first Easter morning, the visitors to the tomb were greeted by:

    a) A young man (Mark 16:5)

    b) No, no, it was no man, it was an angel (Matthew 28:2-5)

    c) You're both wrong, it was two men (Luke 24:4)

    d) There was nobody there (John 20:1-2)
The bible says that the highest heavens can't contain him (god), so I don't get how theists claim that "sin" is caused by someone turning away from god, how can you turn away from an infinite being if he's all around you? It just doesn't make any sense and the bible's full of crap like that.
It's funny really, how people say the bible is not to be taken literally, but i mean of course when it's in your best interests you can take it literally. Look guy, i don't really think you understand what exactly figurative language is, but you really have to stop.
My favorite is in the first two chapters.

-Man and woman are created at the same time

-Man is created, woman is created from his rib

Why is the story told twice?

Then despite it all being 'good' he decides to wipe everyone out after a bunch of begatting.
I rather like the responses to the plot holes:

    "You're misunderstanding the scripture!"

So I suppose the thousands of clergy all "misunderstood the scripture" when they threatened to burn anyone who said the earth was not the center of the universe.
Mine is the whole "God is just" part, because it ignores all the times he punishes people for someone else's crime and occasionally even "harden's [their] heart" so the commission of the crime is unavoidable.
God is all loving and merciful, yet he created hell.

God speaks of forgiveness yet he created hell.

He is all powerful and all knowing, yet he created hell.
The central character, YHVH, has no attractive qualities. A writer has to give his reader some reason to like or at least root for his protagonist. YHVH has none.

You may like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series (there are 14 books I believe). They are considered romantic adventure novels, and I believe the main character is a bounty hunter or something.

Are the Pillars of Heaven that hold up the Earth in the Cosmos, the same as the Vile Vortexes?

Vile Vortexes - Spirals of energy beaming to Earth from space. Saw something like it with infrared photography from space once. On a Mystery show. Are the Pillars of Heaven that hold up the Earth in the Cosmos, the same as the Vile Vortexes?
The Vile Vortexes allegedly include the Bermuda Triangle. So if it "makes" planes and ships disappear and/or crash, what are they crashing into, the pillar itself?

I love shows like that (and conspiracy theories) though and would have loved to see it. I just think they're great fun and of course it's always fascinating to me how differently people can view the same event or series of events. I giggle myself silly whenever Erich von D盲niken is on a show though. He's so earnest and oh so very wrong about so much. LOL!Are the Pillars of Heaven that hold up the Earth in the Cosmos, the same as the Vile Vortexes?
no,they have nothing to do with the pillars, the pillars are symbolic of the holy family and of the theological virtues, faith, chairty and hope.,hears a blessing,a prayer and a our father said just for you, practice the holy rosary, practice makes perfect,we love you all,the holy family. Are the Pillars of Heaven that hold up the Earth in the Cosmos, the same as the Vile Vortexes?
No - you have it wrong. It's turtles all the way down... ;-)

That's all off the top of my head. But I have a question for you: Is the Historian good? My mom wants me to read it but is so big it's scary.New series suggestions?
try the bard academy books (wuthering high, the scarlet letterman, moby clique) i love them and i read twilight and harry potter.
I'm reading THe Night World series, It's about vampires, witches, and werewolves and trust me its freaking good!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It's by L.J. Smith
    Anything by Scott Westerfield
    Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld

I love this book. It's hard to explain but it's about the future, after mankind basically destroyed the earth (global warming, destroying forests, polluting the ocean, etc) survivors made a new society where there's no argueing, war, etc. Everyone is considered "ugly" until they turn 16 and have this sugery that makes them "pretty" and they move to this part of town where all they do is have fun and party all day and night. Tally, the main character cant wait to turn pretty. She meets Shay who's a rebal and convinces Tally to leave the city for a night to see what's out in the wilderness. Tally learns all kinds of things about being pretty and the truth is.. it's not really pretty. EXTREMELY good, and the sequals (Pretties, Specials) are even better. It's full of adventures, cool technologies, romance, etc. There's also a fourth book from another perspective and it's set in Japan called Extras, but it's not as good as the others in my opinion.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This book is also set in the future and gets pretty intense. It's setting is in Panem, a city that's now in what's left of North America (which has become smaller after global warming and melting of the ice caps). Surrounding Panem are 12 districts where each year, one boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen to be in the Hunger Games where they are put into an arena and battle each other and try to survive until there's only one left and is the winner. There's also some romance in it. One of my favorite books and it was also recommended by the author of Twilight.

Deadly Little Secrets by Laurie Stolarz

It's the first of it's series and is also really good. It's about a girl named Camelia who lives a normal life - dating, has friends, decent grades. But, one day when she was picking an earing that she dropped crossing the street, a car was coming towards her and it wasn't stopping. Suddenly, a hot guy shoves her out of the way, saving her life. He left without her saying thank you or asking what his name was. Three months later, she's starting her junior year in high school and there's this rumor about a new guy named Ben who supposedly killed his girlfriend. Camelia doesn't believe in rumors and when she sees Ben, it's the guy who saved her life. She tries to talk to him but he ignores her at first, but later Ben begins touching her weirdly but Camilia only gets more drawn to him. She later finds out he's not ordinary. He can know the future or past of a person by touching a person and he senses that Camelia's in great danger. Really intense but good with a twisted love triangle.

I'm also reading a book right now called Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler and it's pretty thick. Well, it's kind of three books in one. It's suppose to be about this guy, Tristian, and this girl, Ivy, who are crazy about each other, but one day, he dies (somehow which i don't know because i havn't gotten there yet). And also, before, Ivy believed in angels - like an angel for love, etc - but after Tristian's death, she stops beliving in them and thinks she lossed everything, until one day, she realizes Tristian IS her angel. I'm not that far but like someone killed Tristian and whoever killed him is now after Ivy and Tristian is like a ghost protecting her but when he's finish helping her, he can't be with her anymore and yeah. It's suppose to be good.

Other books I've heard were good and planning to read is Need by Carrie Jones, Evernight by Claudia Gray, Lament by Maggie Stiefvater, Beastley by Alex Flinn, Old Magic by Marianne Curley, Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, the Blue is for Nightmares series by Laurie Stolarz, and Evermore by Alyson Noel

I recommend Need by Carrie Jones if you really liked Twilight. I heard it was really similar but with werewolves instead of vampires and more. Some people told me they liked it better than Twilight too. So yeah.. you should check it out%
