Mistake in "The Pillars of the Earth" TV series?

I'm disappointed in the TV series. There's too much politics and not enough detail about cathedral construction, society, economy or how people lived. They are what I loved about the book.

However, what annoys me most are the scenes where we see the cathedral in construction. It's shown "in section", that is they appear to be building from the foundations to the roof a few few at a time. This crazy method means you start at the back wall, build it fully, then do the sides from bottom to top, a few feet at a time and finally put up the front wall.

Never have I seen construction like this, it must be totally unsound. The normal way is to do one course of bricks/stonework, on all 4 sides, at a time.

On some cathedrals, because they took so long to build, you can see different styles/eras of architecture, the earliest at the ground and the latest at the top.

Why did they do this in the TV series, it's not in the book.Mistake in "The Pillars of the Earth" TV series?
Check out the author's website. There are options that include 'fan fare' and 'contact the author.' May be a fan blog or Ken Follett can explain the change...

Unless Follett was able to retain rights to the TV production, they may have made changes to the series that don't match the book. This change in construction would smirch some main characters.
