The Bible says: The Earth is flat!
The flat Earth is established and can never move?! The Sun hurries back to where
it rises?!
The Earth has pillars?!
The Earth has Edges?! The wicked might get shaken off of it and fall off in
space?!
Does Isaiah 40:22 really say that Earth is Round? The Earth is a flat circle?!
Christian Theologians' Commentaries that further suggest that the Earth
is flat.
The light of the Universe and the flat earth's dimensions in the Bible.
Conclusion.
When it comes to scientific claims, the Bible has the dumbest claims, with all due respect to Jews and Christians. The Bible claims that Earth has four ends and four corners. Nobody can ever think a ball or a cycle to have corners and ends! Only flat items can have corners and ends, and this is exactly what the bible is trying to express regarding the shape of the earth. The earth is not flat, as once thought and it has no corners or ends at all. If Magnetic Poles can be taken as ends or corners of earth, then this definitely opposed to the axis of rotation.
Genesis 11:1-9
The Tower of Babel
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why it was called Babel 鈥攂ecause there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
Isaiah 11:12
12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH. (KJV)
Revelation 7:1
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. (KJV)
Job 38:13
13 That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? (KJV)
Jeremiah 16:19
19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ENDS OF THE EARTH, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. (KJV)
Daniel 4:11
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH: (KJV)
Matthew 4:8
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (KJV)
Astronomical bodies are spherical, and you cannot see the entire exterior surface from any place. The kingdoms of Egypt, China, Greece, Crete, sections of Asia Minor, India, Maya (in Mexico), Carthage (North Africa), Rome (Italy), Korea, and other settlements from these kingdoms of the world were widely distributed. Why does the bible say the earth is flat?
Hey,
Im a noob,
You did good and accurate research.
You proved that the writers of the bible wrote what they BELIEVED at the time. A flat world.
God must be pretty stupid if He did not know the world is round in a book so called inspired by an All wise God.
The same is true of the number of planets in our solar system. They knew of only five, the sun and moon.
Thus "7" became the perfect number of God. Good eye. We need more minds like yours on earth.
Because you're looking for reasons to disbelieve the bible.
The bible is not a science book, and therefore is not interested in the shape of the earth.
The bible does not actually make any comments on the shape of the earth, unless you're someone who is looking for scientific discord in the bible. Why does the bible say the earth is flat?
The world is flat, flat on their backs, placed upon the pillars of the earth, the earth is the ear of God, hence shall the heart that hears come from the four corners of the earth, translated ; People like you are going to push those who believe in their Hearts, all of them as one, Jeremiah 16:19 as you see it, a gentile was also known as a heathen, or, he not know.
Well the people said that in the middle ages, not that book, but I still don't understand how they could've thought it was flat. If you look up at night, it looks like the stars are forming a bubble over you...who came to the conclusion that a flat earth, has a bubble shaped star view? Why does the bible say the earth is flat?
Actually it is described as a sphere in the bible.
Pillars are not literal.
The kingdoms were shown in a vision not because he was up high.
GOD IS REAL. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BELIEVE IT FOR IT TO BE TRUE.
GET OVER IT.
I love that when these common expressions are used in society, no one thinks that the person using them is a crazy person. But when the expressions are used in a book you just LOVE to nitpick in your quest to sound clever, watch out!
All according to the technology available at the time of the writing of each utterance..
You shouldn't take it literally, bible is ambiguous. read revelation.
People interrupted what they want.
acctually in genisis it says it's a sphere
It doesn't, hun.
Why do atheists always try to prove the Bible says the world is "flat". Do they simply have trouble with reading comprehension?
You still haven't shown where the Bible says the earth is flat.
Something can be round but still be flat. Ever had a pizza?
Somewhere in Isaiah the Earth is called a circle. Christian fundamentalists jump on that and claim that the Bible calls the Earth a sphere, I have given up trying to understand how Christians can call a two dimensional circle, a three dimensional sphere (or ball).
The ancient writers of the bible thought that the world was flat and the circle was what they saw when they looked around them. The sun rose in the east and set in the west. The moon shone and produced light and the stars were little pinpricks of light in the Heavens.
It says the earth is spherical or circular, which was a statement made WAY before any scientists had the opportunity to view it with telescopes etc.
Isaiah 40:22 "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"
The Institute for Biblical %26amp; Scientific Studies claims "According to Morris this verse describes a spherical earth. The Hebrew word is hwg. I believe that this refers to the circular horizon that vaults itself over the earth to form a dome" (Meyers 1989, 63-9)
Is this suppose to prove something? The vast majority of Christians do not believe the Bible should be taken literally. Why is it then if atheists are trying to "disprove" Christianity that they insist that it must be. All you are proving is the the majority of Christians are correct! Sort of stupid, wouldn't you agree? It definitely completely illogical.
The Bible is not a history book, a science book, nor a sociology book. When it speaks of history it is with the way history was written in the day (which is completely different than the way history is kept today), When it speaks of science it is with the understanding of the day... all the things you point out are part of the then widely accepted Babylonian concept of the universe. When it speaks about society it speaks of society at the time and how people should live within that society. In THAT society women had few rights and slavery was permitted, etc. It was not making edicts as to how society should be for all time.
Just like we do today, the Bible uses phenomenological language. We say, "The sun sets" even though we know the earth is turning and the sun is fixed. Same goes for such things as "four corners of the earth" -- we use such expressions all the time. The Bible is not making scientific statements regarding the shape of the earth, but just using normal language that we use every day (and especially language that was in normal use in the Ancient Near East.
The Bible was written by men, each in their own language and dialect, and naturally includes Ancient Near East cosmology.
Christianity holds that these writings were "inspired" by God, not "dictated" by God. Many varied form of literary genre are used throughout the Bible. It includes a lot of poetry, a lot of historical narrative and a lot of law code and contractual writings (all familiar to the Ancient Near East).
The message of the Bible is not that the Earth stands on pillars, but that God created the universe for His own glory. The Old Testament tells the story of Israel in it's role as the people chosen from which God would bring Jesus into the world to restore humanity's right relationship with God.
Are you really this ignorant?
The ancient people didn't HAVE the knowledge that we have, so how could they KNOW the world was round?
D'UH!
