How do you play the board game, Pillars of the Earth (The instructions are very confusing)?

In a class, we are playing Pillars of the Earth, the boardgame. i know it is based off of the book, The Pillars of the Earth. What are some helpful tips when playing this game because we cannot seem to get the hang of this game.How do you play the board game, Pillars of the Earth (The instructions are very confusing)?
