Any suggestions for some good stand alone books?

I prefer something with romance, but something without is fine. I don't like those typical, predictable romance books like harlequin.

I don't like vampires. Witches are cool, though.

Not looking for chick lits.

Could be historical, or something with a good mystery or even fantasy.

Books that I didn't enjoy:

-Salem's Lot by Stephen King

-Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom

-Pillars of The Earth by Ken FolletAny suggestions for some good stand alone books?
Try nightseer by Laurell K Hamilton, its about witch type stuff, it was her first book but its good.

You could also try Swoon (I dont know who its by), I was plesantly suprised by it.

Both of these have some form of romance, but not the same predictable stuff.
Impulse

Burned

Tricks

Identical

All of those are by Ellen Hopkins. She also wrote Crank and Glass, and is currently writing Fallout. But those are not stand alone books. They are still quite amazing :)

The Kite Runner

A Thousand Splendid Suns

Thirteen Reasons Why

Luna

Keeping You A Secret

Between Mom and Jo

Kissing Kate

Spanking Shakespeare

The Catcher in the Rye

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Empress of the World

To Kill A Mockingbird

A Corner of the UniverseAny suggestions for some good stand alone books?
Try Heather Graham (the author not the actress). She writes suspense and paranormal romance. She has a lot of books out, some in series some stand alone. Good engaging reads definitely not chick lit. Happy reading.
Nokosee: Rise of the New Seminole by Micco Mann.Any suggestions for some good stand alone books?
