For those who have read Ken Follett?

What is your opinion of "The Pillars of the Earth"?For those who have read Ken Follett?
For me, this was a book with a ton of potential that came up short. The narrative flow is easy to read, even when the topic of cathedral architecture is covered in detail, but unfortunately the characters fall flat. None made me want to care about them. It does not help that Follett throws in gratuitous sex (while I am not a prude when it comes to sexual scenes, Follett just goes on and on. Pubic hair is described in detail) and lots of profanity. There is also a pretty rough rape scene.

For me, this book was a disappointment. For those who have read Ken Follett?
I got it for Christmas a couple of years back, and read the first few chapters.

It was okay -- I found the style of writing a bit convoluted at times, but above all I found myself understanding what was going on.

When I told my Mum I was reading, "The Pillars of the Earth" she was like, 'Oh you're too young for that book here read this instead.'

I was a bit taken aback, but I didn't question her. I was about sixteen, and mature for my age so... I don't know what she was talking about. I guess I'm old enough for anything now, considering she's just given me, "The Fourth Queen", which is absolutely jam-packed full of graphic sex scenes.

But yes.

My Mum says it's amazing. I'll probably give it a try again once I've chewed through this growing, 'To Read' list of mine. For those who have read Ken Follett?
I found it one of the best historical fiction novels I have ever read and have re read it several times too along with the sequal World Without End. It has great characters and you can really visualise these people and their struggles. The plots and twists and turns are also very good and keep the pages turning. I have just bought his latest book too Fall of Giants.
Excellent story so poorly written it was hard to struggle though. How many times does he have to tell us how much a war horse costs? Oh, clearly every time one is mentioned on a page. What happens when a man walks in the wood hour his wife has died? He meets a hot milf who doesn't even want to know his name. ..

Great story. To bad a better writer didn't handle it.
