Bernard Cornwall writes a lot of historical fiction, most of it blood and thunder stuff if thats what you are looking for. I would recommend the warlord chronicles and his latest series which is danes and saxons.
Wolfsangel (cannot remember the author right now) is a fairly recent publication. Viking historical fantasy (quite a large emphasis on magic) quite a nice little book.
Ash by Mary Gentle is a kind of historical fantasy/sci fi or alternate history book. Very well written by an author who really knows the period she is writing about and about what its like in battle. So where she has changed things away from history (which she has a lot) it really works well. Please recommend some historical fiction/fantasy books?
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
