Why do so may people have no problem understanding poetry and figures of speech until they pick up a Bible....?

Because ordinary figures of speech and poetry are natural writings. The Bible is a spiritual book. It is God's Living Word. It cannot be understood by the natural man. Only the Holy Spirit can lead and guide us into the truth of God's Word.
The problem is that people expect literal adherence to this figurative book. You can't have it both ways. If the bible is allegory and analogy then you cannot require anyone to behave as though it is literal, if it is literal then you must obey all of it and not just the parts you like.Why do so may people have no problem understanding poetry and figures of speech until they pick up a Bible....?

because most people don't believe in, trust, and base their lives around simple poems. you're right, that's all the bible really is-- a fantasy fiction book.
