Well, QuestionT, if you want something in an alternate world with lots of action, I recommend the Pendragon series. Book one is called The Merchant of Death. The main character is a high-achieving boy from Connecticut. He plays basketball and he has a crush on his biggest rival. Enter: Uncle Press. Uncle Press takes him on a motorcycle ride to an abandoned subway station in Brooklyn and they meet the man who would be Bobby's enemy for life. You can read a review for the last book of the Pendragon series http://www.bookroster.com/soldiers-of-ha鈥?/a> with no spoilers

If you want something more political like 1984, but with more detective-thriller edge, try The Creed of Violence by Boston Teran. It's written about two men who have something very important in common. One is a detective and the other is a killer, but the storyline isn't as obvious as it may seem! I wrote a review http://www.bookroster.com/creed-of-viole鈥?/a> so that people could decide whether they will like it.
If you've read 1984, you may want to read Animal Farm, which is also by George Orwell. I also suggest The Wardstone Chronicles. I enjoy these books and they've been described as 'ideal for those who have outgrown Harry Potter' or something similar.Any good book recommendations based on a few of the following books i've liked in the past?
i think you can read The Sad Night: The Story of an Aztec Victory and a Spanish Loss

Expertly weaving dialogue into her absorbing account, Mathews chronicles the fateful encounter that paved the way for the Spaniards' conquest of Mexico more than 400 years ago.

Yes, what about "The Kane and Abel" series by Jeffrey Archer or Novels by Barbara Taylor Bradford?
Darren Shan vampire saga are pretty good.
If you read ebooks and have $3 to spend, go to Smashwords.com and look at The Long Way Home. Lots of adventure, action, survival and discovery - plus a few surprises. It's had some good reviews.
