Christians would you still believe in the Bible if it says the earth is a circle and sits upon pillars?

The earth is a circle according to the Bible and we all know circles are flat- "It is he that sits upon the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in." (Isaiah 40:22)

The earth sits upon pillars- "He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them." (1 Samuel 2:8)

How do you explain this?Christians would you still believe in the Bible if it says the earth is a circle and sits upon pillars?
The verses below oppose Isaiah 40:22.

Isaiah 11:12
12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH. (KJV)

Revelation 7:1
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. (KJV)

Job 38:13
13 That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? (KJV)

Jeremiah 16:19
19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ENDS OF THE EARTH, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. (KJV)

Daniel 4:11
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH: (KJV)

Matthew 4:8
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (KJV)
If you ever taken any sort of literary course you should be able to recognize figurative language when you see it. Pillars are symbolic of holding something high, like God regards the earth as something as important, and even though the earth really is circular, the circle is referring to a place that "he" is sitting on.Christians would you still believe in the Bible if it says the earth is a circle and sits upon pillars?
yes we still believe in it

your misconceptions of the english language does not make the bible untrue

saying it is a circle means it appears as round if seen from space

it doesn't mean it is flat that your misconception

sitting upon pillars is poetic language which goes above your head

it doesn't mean it is literally sitting on pillars

your misconceptions do not make the bible false
actually the earth DOES have foundations but they aren't pillars or turtles

I'm looking at a basketball and it has the shape of a circle

despite unsubstantiated claims below, the word ''sphere'' is nowhere in the bible nor in the original language otherwise they would have provided itChristians would you still believe in the Bible if it says the earth is a circle and sits upon pillars?
"we all know circles are flat".

Nope, Only you *know that.. HaHa!

If I tell you, I *sit on the board of a corporation, does that mean I have board with the word "corporation on it? or does it mean I sit on a bunch of people that are a part of a board?

No, it is a euphemism for "being a member of".
Interestingly enough, there was a word that means "sphere" in the original language, yet the author chose to use a word that means circle, rather than sphere. The author thought the earth was a flat circle.
That was refuted

I have refuted that!!!

Ermm... You do know that the bible uses metaphors to teach us things? You remember metaphors, right? Figure of speech... saying something that isn't true to make a point... ringing any bells?
Circle is kjv's translation other bibles use vault which only proves that it's not describing a shape of earth.
God created humans therefore he is the most Intelligent one seems routine He would of made sure a bible was left behind with explanations and no cherry picking etc....we are not perfect but he gives us guidance to be
Don't bother. They will claim this is figurative.
As I have explained before, prophecy, such as one finds in the book of Isaiah is often give written in POETIC form!!!!!

The passage you cite from 1 Samuel 2:8 is ALSO clearly in POETIC form.

Do you know nothing about LITERATURE!?!?!?!?!!?

POETRY, be in religious or otherwise, is NEVER literal. It ALWAYS uses IMAGERY and METAPHOR.

Have you NEVER read Robert Frost? Emily Dickenson? Helen Steiner Rice?

Everything they write is in IMAGERY and METAPHOR. Do you really think Robert Frost is talking about stopping beside an actual fork in the road in an actual forest?

OF COURSE NOT!!!!! He's talking about life decisions and how those decisions change the course of our lives and always leave us wondering what would have been ... that "road not taken".

(In case you've never actually READ any Robert Frost and have no idea what I'm talking about: http://www.bartleby.com/119/1.html )

POETRY is IMAGERY and METAPHOR, whether it's in the Bible or not.

Look, this makes me mad because it shows just how badly our educational system is failing our kids. I mean, do you REALLY not KNOW that poetry can't be taken literally?

This isn't a question of whether the Bible should be taken literally. NO! Even the biggest "Fundies" out there know you can't take the POETRY in the Bible literally. Even the biggest Fundies know that Psalms, and the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah that are given in Poetic form, can't be taken literally.

Do they not teach this in schools any more?
